No word on whether the gun used is OK, as the suspect is still at large. But mass killing apologists are already asking whether we should outlaw knives and cars, since they kill people too.

Never forget: The US had an assault weapons ban and it lapsed under GWB.

Since that time, technology brought more advanced weaponry into the population, with disastrous results. Mass shootings have become the norm.

While the vast majority of Americans support common sense gun laws (strict background checks, closing gun show loophole, red flag laws, license and training) our Congress is in gridlock, refusing to pass bills that America supports.

America's fetish with guns will sadly continue, and more people will die....just hope it isn't you or your loved one.

This recent mass shooting in ME is by a man who is former military, a weapons instructor at a nearby Army reserve, he had threatened to carry out a shooting at a training base in Saco, ME. and was treated for 2 weeks in early summer of 2023 at a mental health facility and he reported 'hearing voices.' The warnings were there....they were ignored....and he is still at large (12 noon EDT).

@JSul3 Everything you say is true. And yet this individual was able to obtain a weapon of war and use it as intended, to kill many people.

One thing you didn't note is that 17 hours after the shootings, 10 of the 18 dead still cannot be identified. Not only do these weapons kill, they do so in brutalizing and horrific ways where the mutilation is so severe it prevents ready identification of the dead.

@windinhishair Correct. This sad fact was also pointed out after the horrific shooting in Uvalde, where identifying some of the bodies of the children slain was impossible due to the destructive force of the bullets used.

@windinhishair The FBI has set up a local portable DNA lab. This technology allows a DNA profile to be obtained in approximately one hour. The DNA profile can then be compared to the closest blood relatives and is very useful for bringing some closure to the victim’s family.

The proliferation of these assault weapons has amplified the threat of gun violence by orders of magnitude. Gun violence has replaced motor vehicle accidents as the number one cause of death in minors in the United States. No other first world country is even close to this.

People should be ashamed to accept conditions that result in so many deaths due to gun violence.
