I think its more like he's got more to gain by playing chicken than that he actually wants to go to jail, although I agree with you mostly.

@MistyCee I suppose we shall find out over the next few weeks and months, starting today when the Trump lawyers have to respond to the protective order.
@windinhishair We will, but I wouldn't expect much from lawyers in response to the Protective Order today other than attempts to delay and maybe some pretty vague free speech stuff. This will probably be pretty drawn out, with everyone but Trump, including secretly his own lawyers wanting to gag him, but at the same time, giving him enough rope to hang himself.

@MistyCee I doubt the judge will issue a ruling today, since the Trump lawyers have until 5 PM to file, at which point the prosecutor will be given a copy along with the judge for review. The Judge has been very prompt in issuing rulings so far, so I suspect that it won't take her more than a day or two. Of course, Trump's lawyers will appeal no matter what the ruling is.
We can look to the documents indictment as instructive to what could happen next. The same issue is still pending in that case, though that is expected given that Judge Cannon is highly favorable to Trump. Even though that indictment was a couple of months ago, I won't be surprised for the issue to be addressed first in the election crimes indictment.

@windinhishair Which issue, the Protective Order, a Gag order, or remanding him for violating them?

@MistyCee What is covered by the Protective Order in the election fraud trial. The issue of how much Trump can say or release about the evidence during discovery in the documents trial is still an open one.

@MistyCee After a month or two, the difference between the two judges will become very stark. The election fraud trial will move along at a brisk pace compared to the glacial pace of the documents trial, due to the judge. She is doing all she can to make sure it isn't tried until after the election, without doing so much that she gets removed.
@windinhishair Ahh. It's also a little less of an issue here, without the documents being at issue, and it probably ties in more with "aspirational" incitement to violence and stochastic terrorism since he seems to be escalating.
If I was the AG, I might even consider asking for a day or two file a reply memo before she rules, figuring he'll make things worse when he Truths about his own lawyers tonight.

@windinhishair Don't forget that Cannon is in way over her head and dealing with classified docs as well. The DC case really should move faster.

@MistyCee The issue is a bit different in each situation, but Trump obviously believes he is in greater jeopardy in the election fraud indictment, so he will continue to lash out and dare the judge to reign him in. It isn't a pretty sight to watch a meltdown in action, but that is what is happening. If his lawyers can't get him under control, the judge will have no option but to issue a gag order. And sadly, if that doesn't work--and there is a good chance it won't--then he will have to be put in custody for at least a time.

@MistyCee Good point about Cannon. She really is in way over her head, and her preference to help Trump where possible will further complicate that.
@windinhishair I kind of thought the stuff about her inexperience was overblown, but the thing where she forgot to swear in a jury before voir dire really brought it home.

@MistyCee She made another inexplicable ruling in Trump's favor today:
