How do the police dispatchers know my cell phone number?

Last night, the police were at my house, and I wasn't at home. The police station dispatcher called me to let me know the police were outside my house.

Your provider is required to set up what is called PSAP data on every phone registered in the USA. Every phone also has built in to it a way for e911 to track the location of phones for emergency purposes from the many towers throughout the USA. If they need to contact you back from dispatch they can put in the address and the system converts that to coordinates and then it can pull the active phones associated with those coordinates. All of that helps in emergency situations to be able to dispatch even if the caller hangs up.

@perceptivei Youre welcome.
@Fungirlmmm I’m glad to know that’s been set up. When cell phones were new, the user was at a real disadvantage in an emergency situation.
