Why are employers responsible for my actions?

If I accidentally drain a car of its transmission fluid instead of its oil and then the customer drives off and their car destroys itself, why is NY employer solely responsible for paying for it? Don't get me wrong: it's a relief. I just don't understand the legal logic.
