Police are Garbage

@bijouxbroussard they might be nice people off the job but their vocation is inherently bad. They are bad people for doing it.

Have you ever seen the show Dexter? He's so likeable. Ever seen Hannibal? Kill Bill? Loads of examples of evil characters who are personable and charming but they are STILL EVIL.

I assumed this was a real world complaint. I have family who are actual police officers. Went into that line of work because they figured it made more sense than just having to hate the racist, abusive police that were there.

@bijouxbroussard I'm using fictional characters to illustrate a point. Real world examples abound as well. Ted Bundy comes to mind.

I have known cops who were nice. That doesn't make them good.

@Doomflower I’ve known some who are decent people as well. It’s definitely not a job I’d ever want to do. That doesn’t make me unaware of the bad ones.

@bijouxbroussard Think of the CEO of a tobacco company. Probably nice enough as a person. Still evil.

@bijouxbroussard I argue that you cannot work in an evil profession and consider yourself a good person.

@Doomflower I don’t accept that analogy. A tobacco company is making a profit. That’s why it exists.

@Doomflower It’s not an evil profession. There are evil, corrupt people in it, and its culture in our country is still racist, because it reflects the values of our country. But the concept of policing—to protect those who can’t protect themselves—is a noble concept.

@bijouxbroussard Police work as it exists has some fringe benefits to society that should continue to exist. However the bad stuff they do and their failures to do their job at ctitical times are so bad things can't continue as they are.

I'd be for a compromise between disbanding the cops and keeping things as is. Disarm the police. Make officers with firearms a special thing and focus on community service and the things cops do that actually helps people.
