@bookerdana Supposedly, the southern accent is closest to Medieval English. What we think of as the English accent is a relatively recent development.

@SW-User Many educated people in the past had what was called the mid-Atlantic accent. It sounded somewhere between American and British. Here is a good example, Judge Learned Hand singing "The Iron Merrimac," a song from the Civil War. Fast forward to 1:05 if you want to skip the singing and just hear him speak.
