@SW-User in short, there was conflict between Jews and macabees. Afterwards the temple was rebuilt and there was only enough fuel for the light for 1 day but it lasted 8. So hannukah lasts 8 days, the menorah is lit each night and presents are given. Oily foods are also eaten to represent the oil for the light.
