“taqiyya” or “kitman”

Concept of Lying in Islam
Taqiyya
Taqiyya is a term in Islam that refers to the practice of concealing one's faith or religious identity to protect oneself from danger. This concept is particularly significant in Shia Islam, where it has been used historically to avoid persecution. While it is primarily associated with Shia Muslims, Sunni sources also recognize it under certain conditions, especially when life or property is at risk.
Kitmān
Kitmān is another related term that means the concealment of one's beliefs through silence or omission. It is often used in contexts where individuals must hide their convictions to avoid harm. Both taqiyya and kitmān highlight the complexities of truthfulness in situations of threat or danger.
Permissibility of Lying
Islam generally prohibits lying, viewing it as a major sin. However, scholars agree that lying may be permissible in specific circumstances, such as:
To protect oneself or others from harm.
***During times of war to maintain the strength of the Muslim community.
To reconcile disputes between individuals.
These exceptions are meant to serve a greater purpose or prevent greater harm, but they are not taken lightly within Islamic teachings.
Deception, Lying
and Taqiyya

Does Islam permit Muslims to lie?

Muslim scholars teach that Muslims should generally be truthful to each other... unless the purpose of lying is to "smooth over differences" or "gain the upper-hand over an enemy." (Guess who the enemy is!!)
There are several forms of lying to non-believers that are permitted under certain circumstances, the best known being taqiyya (the Shia name). *** These circumstances are typically those that advance the cause of Islam - in some cases by gaining the trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them.****
Deceitful as the day is long…
