Do Parts of the Qur'an Condone "Killing the Infidel"?

Some people maintain that there some verses of the Qur'an -- Islam's holy book -- that condone "killing the infidel"?

It is true that the Qur'an commands Muslims to stick up for themselves in a defensive battle -- in other words, if an enemy army attacks, then Muslims are to fight against that army until they stop the aggression. All of the verses in the Qur'an that speak about fighting/war are in this context.

There are some specific verses that are very often "snipped" out of context, either by critics of Islam discussing "jihadism," or by misguided Muslims themselves who wish to justify their aggressive tactics.

"Slay Them" -- If They Attack You First
For example, one verse (in its snipped version) reads: "slay them wherever you catch them" (Qur'an 2:191). But who is this referring to? Who are "they" that this verse discusses? The preceding and following verses give the correct context:

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors. And slay them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. . . But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. . . If they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (2:190-193).

It is clear from the context that these verses are discussing a defensive war, in which a Muslim community is attacked without reason, oppressed and prevented from practicing its faith. In these circumstances, permission is given to fight back -- but even then Muslims are instructed not to transgress limits and to cease fighting as soon as the attacker gives up. Even in these circumstances, Muslim are only to fight directly against those who are attacking them, not innocent bystanders or non-combatants.

"Fight the Pagans" -- If They Break Treaties
A similar verse can be found in chapter 9, verse 5 -- which in its snipped, out of context version could read: "fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war)." Again, verses preceding and following this one give the context and create a different meaning.

This verse was revealed during a historical period when the small Muslim community had entered into treaties with neighbouring tribes (Jewish, Christian and pagan). Several of the pagan tribes had violated the terms of their treaty, secretly aiding an enemy attack against the Muslim community. The verse directly before this one instructs the Muslims to continue to honour treaties with anyone who has not since betrayed them because fulfilling agreements is considered a righteous action. Then the verse continues to say that those who have violated the terms of the treaty have declared war, so fight them (as quoted above).

But directly after this permission to fight, the same verse continues, "but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them . . . for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." The subsequent verses instruct the Muslims to grant asylum to any member of the pagan tribe/army who asks for it, and again reminds that "as long as these stand true to you, stand ye true to them: for God loves the righteous."

Conclusion
Any verse that is quoted out of context misses the whole point of the message of the Qur'an. Nowhere in the Qur'an can there be found support for indiscriminate slaughter, the killing of non-combatants or murder of innocent persons in 'payback' for another people's alleged crimes.

The Islamic teachings on this subject can be summed up in the following verses (Qur'an 60:7-8):

"It may be that God will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom ye (now) hold as enemies. For God has power (over all things), and God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

God does not forbid you, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loves those who are just."

They are in excellent company! Here's some loveable stuff from the Bible (Deuteronomy 13):

1 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you,

2 and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,”

3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. (...)

5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has advocated rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way in which the LORD your God has commanded you to walk. So you must purge the evil from among you.a

6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (which neither you nor your fathers have known,
7 the gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, whether from one end of the earth or the other),
8 you must not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity, and do not spare him or shield him.

9 Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.
10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.

Really nice isn't it!

@Panna Islam was extremely aggressive at the beginning; it became peaceful and enlightened later; there was a Golden Age of Islam. Still later they became victims of foreign aggression themselves. Today Islamic culture is dying a slow and painful death.

@helenS It’s become dogmatic and the religion is held hostage by imams - a priesthood that the Prophet actually warned against!

@Panna That's when it all went wrong. They saw the success of Western countries and copied to dogmatism of their religions.

More Muslims need to make an in-depth study of their own religion, in that case.
Because the power hungry people among Muslims have historically been very easily able to lead Muslims to violence over other peoples citing exhortations from the Quran and Hadith.

"Taking the sword of Islam to infidel lands" is a very old historic tradition among various Muslim peoples, which has caused great suffering to completely peaceful countries and people that were not even enemies of Islam... the violent repercussions of this persist to this day and are showing no signs of going away.

Perhaps what would have really helped from the start - and will help even now - is if Islam, and even Christianity, both become non-expansionist - that is, religions that are not interested in converting others or claiming others' lands for their god, thier way of life or themselves.
But it will require an impossibly fundamental change change for these religions to become non-evangelical and non-proselytizing. Or in Islamic terms, to outlaw "Dawah" and to accept that Allah wanted certain people to be "kafir" and that there is nothing wrong with, or in being, the "kuffar".

Going by the OP's post, it seems that perhaps if Muslims actually knew the Quran, they would have acted way differently than history tells us they did.. or at least the violent elements would have been controlled.

However, in the end, it does not matter what the Quran says. For non-Muslims, Islam is as Muslim does... and Muslims haven't really done too well!

No idea. Never read the Koran (I like the old spelling), but I do know the Bible contains quite a list of approved reasons for killing people. Even the much quoted "Thou shalt not kill" actually translates to something closer to "Thou shalt not commit an unjustified killing."

Yes they do. As does the Holy Babble.
