Mind the water!
I read about the MV Gardyloo on an Edinburgh FB page recently. At first I thought the post and comments were a joke, but it seems to be true.
MV Gardyloo was a specially designed sewage dumping vessel that operated from Leith between 1978 and 1998. The boat would make three trips a week to dump Edinburgh sewage out at sea. This only stopped in 1998, when dumping was banned by the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. More interference from the unelected EU bureacrats 🙄
The boat made more than 2600 voyages, dumping 8.5 million tonnes of sewage in the North Sea. The trip was open to the public and 6000 passengers made the trip. Comments were that the onboard food wasn't recommended.
After dumping stopped, MV Gardyloo was sold to Azerbaijan, and since 2006 has been used as a water carrier. I hope it was well cleaned first 🤢
