A letter i wrote to dad

Dear dad,

It might prove enlightening to you if you were get to know how to use YouTube better, and then to search for certain names you trust, and see the kinds of topics they talk about, and then to listen to them. This would produce in a good sense i believe a rabbit hole of discovery, and affirmation.

For example our esteemed Presbyterian teacher RC Sproul, in a lecture he gave on Liberalism, is that it messes around with essentials of the faith, that it is anti-Christian. And regarding for example the debate between Calvinists and Arminians is between Christians, that such doctrines as Predestination is not an essential doctrine of Christianity. But it is such a doctrine that intrinsically is interesting to me. Many will have a gut reaction to it, it’s offensive to our human reasoning and so on.

There are sides for every issue, and it is easy to get confused, and disheartened by the depths theology goes, especially modern theology. My method of inquiry is self styled, i wouldn’t be able to follow a strict regiment of learning. But i do affirm, renewingly of the incredible use of videos for teaching aids for the readings to be understood better.

When you come across people with varying points of view, be not surprised, Christianity is an old religion, as in being over 2,000 years old. Many people are set in their own ways, and will belligerently object to any mention of an opposing point of view. Remind yourself of what is essential at times such as those, and realize that people in general have reasons to believe as they do, and you can’t merely change them by saying what you think you should, yes, maybe you should say those things, but to expect people to change through your own efforts isn’t what could be termed the classical or orthodox manner of how things happen.

Listen to voices talk about issues that are of pressing concern for you, for example the other day you said you’ve never been able to relax, or make yourself relax. Type in the name you respect along with the word relax and/or words similar to it, like reassurance, and listen to such things, with a openness that it is not too late for you to experience a peace that surpasses all understanding, and not credit such a thing when it happens to the trusted source, but to Whom the source points to.

If this kind of use of YouTube and other resources available on the internet is implemented i believe we’d have very little use of our cable channels. You can find anything online, sports, news, theology, learning in general, plus any kind of music you like. And without the cable channels we’d be saving some money and make my brother very pleased, maybe he could educate us on how to appropriate a smart tv that could transmit on a large screen streaming material, it’s not just movies, or shows, but educational and inspirational kinds as well.

It is said that we are more than conquerors, and having clearer vision and insight into what speaks to us would in my opinion enhance our experience. I would predict that the rocky interactions experienced would in some noticeable ways be smoothed somewhat with greater understanding on both sides, that such a change is instigated by the one who wants it, and does the things needed for it to happen, namely a certain level of non-judgementalism, which is in my view a general understanding that people believe what they do for whatever reason it is. And that people don’t change just because someone argued with them.
