Treat email like snail mail not like a chat. When I was working I didn't open my email until lunchtime because I knew that I would have to spend at least an hour answering it and more on acting on it. So I used the morning when I was fresh to get done the tasks I already had in progress and the afternoon when I was already a little tired to do the more fragmented things. I was, and am, a software developer.
