@SW-User It is real but it is not some special parallel WWW, and is not a brand name, but it uses the standard WWW.
It is a generic name for software that encrypts web-sites and messages so deeply that they are unreadable to anyone else, openly or by straight interception; so the intended reader as well as sender needs the same software and access methods.
I see other respondents here mention its legal use by companies with rather insecure IT systems to exchange internal files between branches. I think it is also used by people living in dictatorships to tell the outside world what is happening there.
Otherwise though it has become infested by criminals. Although paedophiles and their suppliers are the ones receiving more of the publicity, probably far more are terrorists, drugs and arms dealers, money-launderers and large-scale money thieves.
Although "Dark" it is not invincible, and already international criminal gangs have been caught by interception and forensic, code-breaking analysis of their messages and sites.
