These substances were not recognised as dangerous, were even thought good, at first but tobacco and asbestos were still being sold long after they were identified as such!
At least Bayer did admit the heroin should be used only on medical prescription.
DDT has been replaced but one of its main alternatives - sorry, I forget its name - being used widely in many parts of the world (even being sprayed on lawns!) is now very severely restricted or banned altogether in others for its danger to necessary insects and to humans alike.
