Was social media a terrible mistake?

All the furor over Elon Musk and Twitter has me considering the question: would it actually be terrible if he ran Twitter into the ground? Social media has done nothing worthwhile for society, on the contrary it has brought out the worst in people. Too many people fighting over politics, religion (or lack of), or stupid shit that has no impact or bearing on life. Its largely a waste of time.

There's already competitors to Twitter so I'm not sure if it's success or failure is going to move the dial one way or another. What social media represents is why people flock to it. To that, yeah. I wish it had never been envisioned and put in to motion. I think it's far more detrimental than it is helpful. Particularly in some other countries where it's been blatantly weaponized.
