Was social media a terrible mistake?

All the furor over Elon Musk and Twitter has me considering the question: would it actually be terrible if he ran Twitter into the ground? Social media has done nothing worthwhile for society, on the contrary it has brought out the worst in people. Too many people fighting over politics, religion (or lack of), or stupid shit that has no impact or bearing on life. Its largely a waste of time.

It’s like any advancement in technology, there’s always the potential for abuse. Social media allows people to communicate with each other internationally in ways not possible before without becoming a world traveler. So I don’t think it’s a bad thing just because some people abuse it. Having said that, I never used Twitter, and if people jump ship because of Musk’s arrogance and mismanagement, I won’t shed any tears either.
