And also when the internet used to make a horrible hissing/crackling noise trying to get a connection ?? Man that was annoying.

Yes, the old modem connection.
Even before America On Line, there was Compuserve and before that dozens of bbs (bulletin board systems) that were all text based systems because modem speeds were slow and connection times were ultra expensive.
As I recall, connect time to Compuserve was once $35 per hour during the day and dropped down to like $2 or less per hour at night.
