I just realized I'm so old that

When I finger people over the internet, many of you weren't even born yet.

You probably don't even know which finger I'm referring to.

The unix finger utility of course.
As if younger people were totally ignorant! 🤨

@helenS I'd forgotten all about that util until this post. Too funny. 🤣

@WindTherapy Yes, and also "whois".
They usually return nothing, on most modern systems.
Remember finger returning "no plan"?😏
WindTherapy · 56-60, M
@helenS Not sure if I'd seen the "no plan" or not. It's been a LONG time since I've done much UNIX at the command line outside of macOS.

Once was a day that a command line UNIX system was my social media avenue...my how things have changed. :)

@WindTherapy I use the MacOS terminal emulator every day, 8–10 hours a day. It's very good. There are some open source alternatives such as iTerm, but I can't see any advantages of those.
I use the terminal emulator mainly to connect to several servers via ssh/sfpt. And the operating system of those servers is.... drum roll.... SOLARIS!! 🥳
Of course, I use the vi to write my back-end code.

@helenS Well that's kinda cool. There are a fair number of IT folks that struggle with command line. But damn it's so powerful once you master it. I've heard of SOLARIS but don't think I've ever done anything with it.

I never used vi enough to remember all the commands. I cheat and use nano as it's menu options are easier.
helenS · 36-40, F
@WindTherapy Using nano is not a sin; it is a penance.

@helenS Well I'll admit, I'm not averse to working in the command line, but my job doesn't require a lot of it. So I'll stick to those things that are easy, and most importantly, help prevent myself...from myself. 🤣

(I used to work with a guy who wouldn't proof his work. Miss-spelling and punctuation errors were a thing with him. And for some reason he never seemed to understand how important that was as an IT professional. 🤦‍♂️)
