If God is all powerful he cannot be all good. If God is all good he cannot be all powerful.
Good is not a practical survival strategy it requires loyalty, self-sacrifice and love. Religion provides a rationale to be good based on future expectations.

Many reasons. Some its a cultural thing, they were brought up that way. Some hit such a low point in their lives they desperately searched for something to give meaning to their lives and "found " god so to speak. Even though im not a believer i do envy them. I envy that they have something in their lives to give themselves purpose, its what drives their every action and pushes them to endure the brunt of the storm. I need that in my life

I think fear, a desire to belong, cultural demands and expectations and a need to believe in the supernatural via a personal connection to either explain, offer guidance or provide a 'plan,' are probably key drivers. What comes out the other side is up to the individual.

I think belief in an unseen power is a natural and comforting phenomenon. The big question for me is whether it's necessary... even false beliefs can have great value
They are convinced it's true. The same reason people believe anything. But nobody seems to understand how convincing works.

I wonder if animals like chimps, dolphins, whales, or elephants have a higher power in their lexicon.
