The voices in my head. They taught me magic, then taught me to reason. Now I know they were messing with me and magic is bullshit. Leaves me isolated because, as one of my community college profs argued, everybody believes in at least a little magic. Probably for the same reasons as the pigeons in Skinner boxes developed their little rituals. Aristotle identified humanity as rational animals, and I think he was right, but so was Nietzsche in arguing that we're still basically beasts. We're evolutionarily one side of a conceptual divide, and so much of what we do is still unreasoning, brutish crap.
