Here's an idea: if someone else has a problem, consider the idea that they can have problems too without invalidating yours.

It doesn't matter if yours are better or worse or whatever. It's a different topic. If you think it's the same topic then you have trouble separating other people's needs from yours.

Sometimes sharing that you have/had similar struggles does a few things:
A) lets them know they aren't unique to their situation (they aren't terrible ppl, simply bc they have a problem).
B) can provide a source of experience, if someone has survived such a situation already...can give hope to them, or advise
C) "we're all in this together" mentality, as a way of support
