My hunch is it is that much based on one of the following;
Limited contractor skills
Use of the Craftsman pricing book
Use of a material that isn't friendly
A single dimension
Local plumbing practices
Failure to think big enough

I just feel like $8k-$12k should be enough 😔
@XamadtheFirst:
Yes ... a shower is 3k, toilet $300, a sink $1k
Flooring $1k, plumbing $2k, painting 1k, other stuff $1k
A point-of-use water heater could add $2k

A normal nice shower ... $2k ... existing plumbing ... reduce the plumbing cost by half

And how much would it cost to tear out a hot tub and replace it with just a soaker tub?
Consider using electronic valves to reduce cost, plumbing cost and improve experience
@XamadtheFirst: inside hot tub?
GohantheThird · M
@questionWeaver: yes, it's in the master bath in question.
Usually the removal of the tub is included in the sub-contractor's install price of the new tub ... they are easy to remove.
Most the cost is the tile/fiberglass work to seam the new tub into the existing wall ... that is done later in the project. The tub installer should install a waterproof fabric around the tub ... it is bright orange.
If walls or floor are damaged .. some carpentry may be required ... insist on moisture durable materials ... they cost no more.

@questionWeaver: Thanks man!
Tip: have a plumber remove all the old stuff ... then have the contractor re-estimate $6K ofbthe contractors estimate is a reserve in case the underlying structure needs attention.

@questionWeaver: Will do. I suspect the house might need a repiping, so I'll be sure we allocate funds for that.
@XamadtheFirst:
CPVC pipe ... and consider electronic 12v valves
Don't let them go back to copper or iron pipe
