I didn’t even mention, my apartment burned down a couple months ago

It happened while I was out picking up friends that were gonna spend a couple nights at my place. We got back to my apartment a few hours later and there were police and firefighters all up and down the street. Only my apartment was majorly affected.

The firefighters said that it appeared that my heater malfunctioned while I was away. It was a really old gas heater. Wasn’t even switched on… they think there might have been an issue with the pilot light. When all the firefighters were there, one of my neighbors (who has the same heater setup I had) had the firefighters come in her unit and look at her heater, cause she wanted to make sure she wouldn’t have the same issue. The firefighters told her to have her gas shut off immediately, because just by looking at the heater they could tell it was not safe and was a fire waiting to happen. Guess I was just the unlucky one.

Would have been nice to know my heater was such a damn fire hazard, I would have had my gas turned off and gotten a little plug in heater for the main area or something for when I was cold. I did use that heater a lot, living in midtown Ventura, it’s by the beach so it stays pretty cool in the area, plus there was a big shady tree in front of my apartment. The apartment had no built in AC which freaked me out at first having lived in Thousand Oaks all my life (not as bad as the Valley but it does get upwards of 80 and occasionally 90 in the summer), but it ended up being fine majority of the time without AC, I was running the heater for more than half the year. Some friends did give me a little portable AC unit that I used maybe 10-15 days out of the year, max.

Okay that was a bit of a tangent but yeah my apartment burned down, I’m not sure if property management or the owner is going to be liable, but it def wasn’t my fault lol. I talked to the home insurance adjuster or whoever briefly today (gotta call her again at 11) and she said that the property OWNER has filed a claim (I’m not sure if against property management or against me?? If it’s the latter then what the fuck, but I don’t fully remember what the lady said so maybe it’s just a routine thing against property management idk, I’m not an expert in how insurance claims work).

This and some other things lately has put life on hard af mode rn

yeah i don't like gas at all neither does my hub.. when he was younger his neighbor's house blew up and killed a baby girl inside with the fire .. at least you are ok and now the complex is shut off and wont have a worse incident? 😳

@GoFish I don’t know if the complex shut off everyone’s gas… hopefully the incident prompted them to replace everyone’s heaters. I’m not living there anymore so idrk what’s going on

Do you have tenants insurance? Your landlord is only responsible for providing a building that you live in. If that building burns down you don’t have to pay rent. An insurance policy will cover your belonging and hotel expenses until you can return to your building or find different accommodation.

@Muthafukajones yes I have renters insurance in fact I was just on the phone with Mercury insurance about getting a payout for a claim

@Zeuro if you have additional living expenses insurance as part of your policy I would get a hotel suite and use all of it while you search for accommodation. They have to pay for your food out too. I lived on a claim for 5 months when my building flooded. Hotel. Lunch and dinner out everyday. Even room service and movies in suite! That was the life!!!
