If someone invites you to live with them (Alaska law) and then you break up- is it legal for them to demand RENT from you?

@TradEmily In a relationship, I suppose it is assumed that 2 consenting adults have a shared responsibility. This would apply for rent as well. Being invited has nothing to do with it.

@TradEmily I don't know about the law. Maybe you can ask legal advice. A lot of lawyers give a free advice for the first appointment. Or maybe there is a legal helpline somewhere?
It definitely is unfortunate that you didn't make clear agreements on the rent at the start of your relationship/ living together.

@TradEmily On my lease it stated anyone staying for 2 weeks or more is considered legally living there.

@MrBrownstone yeah but if you didn't have a rent agreement with someone could you just say they owe you money retrospectively

@Tamara68 it was clear, it was implied he was inviting me to live there as his partner not someone who was paying rent!

@TradEmily if it’s not in writing or and you didn’t sign anything than naaa u good u don’t have to pay a cent . sure they can ask you to pay but…….

@Tenletters definitely there was no discussion about it before hand and certainly no communication about it or written agreement

@TradEmily yeah most states are pretty similar . If there was never any agreement than you don’t have to. Your considered an “at will” tenant . They could evict you but would have to go through the legal process
