Why purchase a home without it's own driveway?

Parking on the streets seems to be such a pain in the ass. I know it is popular downtown though.

Don't a lot of the older urban areas have alleys, at least my first place in the city did. I had a garage, and still had a street parking permit because it was more convenient to park in front of my house.
@BrewCityBarfly I know of a lot of urban areas that do not allow you to park in alleyways. I guess that varies though. Just seems to be a pain, I mean if you just took public transit I guess it would not be much of a issue.
