New home search

So, I've been looking to buy a house for a couple of years now, but finances keep causing issues. Every time I find something I like and send it to my mom and bff, they always say something negative. This last one was because the unfinished basement had some weird wiring (it is UNFINISHED), there was no dishwasher, the crime is supposedly double over what it is where I currently live, and it is too small. The house is newly renovated with a fenced in yard and well within my budget. It just sucks that they keep doing this. I just need a house that is bigger than my apartment. I have never felt home in this apartment.

Your voice matters and you should not let other people decide what you should do. They'll get over it but you may not. Don't let people control you like that. Listen to your own heart. You know what you can afford and what you cannot and you can always get ADT Security for your home and it's not that expensive if you bought that home. You come first and you call the shots. If you listen to other people and let them tell you what they think you should do, you'll never be happy. Please respect yourself and your decisions above all others and do what you need to do. That is your right and privilege, and that is respecting yourself.

When buying a home, please make sure that the deed is clear and there's no co-signers or liens on it or unpaid balances you could be stuck for, and by all means, have it inspected before you buy it or sign any papers, because you never know if the roof is beyond repair or the foundation is crumbling or there's too much termite damage. These must be done. It could also be sitting under a mine, you never know and I've seen it happen before so please be careful. Don't just grab the first thing. Make sure you get that inspection. Make sure you have an attorney look over the fine print on your contract before signing anything! If you don't and you overlook something you may not be able to get out of the contract and then you will be stuck. Make sure you know what your monthly payments will be exactly and your property taxes. You have to be able to afford your property taxes each year. Another thing to look out for is if your job is stable enough to wear you can actually afford this house and you won't be losing your job or laid off. Backup plans are very important and at this point, it may actually benefit you better to just move from your apartment and rent someplace else. Maybe you could find a mobile home that rents cheaper than a home. With home there is maintenance to keep up with and the cost to have your lawn mowed each month is not cheap, and your lawn usually needs to be mowed every couple weeks before it gets too high, so those are all things to just consider. Better safe than sorry. Never moved too fast because haste makes waste and can end up being more costly for you. Also make sure you know what the up front deposit will be towards utilities! It may not hurt to save a little bit more this year so you can get something really nice next year. I know it's inconvenient and I know how people can get tired of an apartment, but sometimes doing things too quickly can actually hurt us and that's why I'm still in my apartment. I would love to change after 16 years in this apartment but right now that's not very realistic for me nor sensible, so I will try to save to where I can actually afford to move. There's many things to consider including closing costs which can be very high and you must be very clear on those things before you attempt to buy a home. It all adds up and you don't want to get yourself in a predicament.

Actually, wiring is very super important when buying a home. You don't want to buy something where the circuits are overloaded or the wiring is not right and could cause a fire. The wiring should not be exposed but I know some basements do have the wiring exposed and I guess that's okay as long as it's new wiring but these old homes can really be a fire hazard. And the foundation is what concerns me in these old homes. Sometimes "newly renovated" means they're covering up something, in my book. One cannot be too careful because you have to think you'll be stuck with this house once you buy it. Better safe than sorry, in the long run. You might want to look for something a little better because even you said it's too small. And after a while that "too small", may make you feel like you wish you had stayed where you were. I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm trying to protect you. I want you to get a new place but I want you to make sure it's right for you and that's something you'll regret later and get really tired of because let me tell you, I'm real tired of looking at my surroundings for 16 years in this apartment, but I'm wise enough to know that if I bide my time and save a little more, I'll be better off in the long run. I can't wait to leave this apartment even though it is a really nice apartment, but I really want my own place and not under the thumb of a landlord.

Ignore them and get what feels right for you.
Who is living in the house, you... or your mother and friend???

By all means, listen to their views and take them into consideration - but, also consider that they don't have to love the property unless they are the ones who will be living in it with you.

like I've been told, don't fall for the first thing you see.
