I was raised in a house that we ran a fireplace in winter. People speak well of the fireplace.

The work to fell and stack wood or pay someone else to do it is substantial.

Rolling a half burned log on the andirons, kindle the fire, scoop ash and descale the stack are all on the man who ventures to use one.

Make no mistake about it, the ease you imagine from watching a movie or TV s Once you are picking up popping embers from the floor near the fireplace and busting your hump warming the firebrick where keeping it raked out and fed doesn't become a three course a day requirement and you learn it's not as simple as you imagined to use one, you'll decide against being a full time fire tender.
