What does it mean when you lose part of the power to your house?

My husband was screwing an outdoor lightbulb into the socket of a motion light outside our house. He said there was a buzzing sound and then the lights went out along some of the wall outlets in our house and two bedrooms. Flipping the breakers has not worked. Then when we were plugging something into one of the walls that does have electricity to the outlets one of the bedroom lights flickered.

I'm an electrical engineer and I work for the electric utility. Most of the answers you received are totally wrong.

First, check your circuit breakers to see if any have tripped.

If not, how much of your house is affected? If it's approximately half of your house, the problem is most likely with your electric service coming into the house.

Are any of your neighbors having a similar problem?

Call your electric utility and report the problem. It sounds like it's their problem and not yours.

@Bob25 it was a wall outlet gone bad in the family room. The entire house is wired wrong. For a long time the person who lived here did his own wiring. He had almost everything going to one breaker. A lot of the outlets we have are really old and loose.
