A question about bedroom design…

When I used to visit family members in the southern U.S. whether it was my grandparents and relatives in Louisiana or aunts and uncles in Atlanta, GA, they all had really high beds, that seemed three mattresses high (see pic).

Was that just [b]my[/b] family, or was it a feature of southern homes ?

I think it was common to stack several thinner mattresses on top of the springs (back before "box springs" became a thing). I've even heard my dad talk about how they stored the extra quilts between the mattresses.
