Best option for low housing cost?

I would like to buy land and build a small 2 bedroom basement or earth contact home with the basics. I don't even like the newer modern homes with granite countertops and all. I prefer a home with carpet in the living room and bed rooms. Actual linoleum floors in kitchen and bathroom. Not the tiles, but the old school sheet of linoleum. Regular counter tops. Basically how they made homes in the 80's, 90's, & early 2000's. Or. . Do a modular/manufactured home. Or just buy something already done and ready. What would be cheaper?

I don't know the expense but I'm certain the roof structure of an underground home will be the most expensive part to build. It has to support about 5 to 10 times the load of a standard roof
