How can I cockroach proof my home so that I never find a roach in it again.

I just saw a roach in my room and the hassle of getting its dying body out was enough to get my heart beating at 115 bpm. Can someone please give me some tips as to what I can do to never find a roach in my house? There are young kids, a dog, and fish tanks in my house so keep that in mind with the advice you give.
