Vintage to antique... birthing chair. I knew that as soon as I saw it.
Funny how things have changed and women are expected to stay in bed even though it's not the best way.
EDIT: would I buy it? If I were going to have children, I'd give it thought and research how it was used... or if a daughter wanted it... I'd buy it. :)

@SW-User How does it work? It doesn't look very comfortable. I can see why it has the grips on all sides. I imagine the value is that you can sit in all sort of positions depending on what feels most comfortable.

@ShadowSister I've never used one but agree about the handles. I would think women had more say in what felt right and worked better for them personally than what many get today... being somewhat told to do what others think is best. My understanding is beds became the new way because it was easier for the doctor to see what was going on... not really about what worked for the woman.

@SW-User Agreed. In the old days, midwifes worked with the women to feel what worked with their bodies. These days we think we've made so many medical advances, but we prioritize drugs and the convenience of the doctor over the natural signals from the woman's body. I have been my sister-in-law's partner through her birth with a midwife in her home. The difference was night-and-day.

@ShadowSister I'll bet it was quite the difference!
I even had a nurse tell me I was not in labor and really made me mad! I had my baby three hours later and nobody was ready! lol
I'd like to know when others decided they knew our bodies better than we do and knew what works best too.
