Happy New Year.. but what is that?

Some guy called Dionysius Exiguus started the Gregorian Calendar in 525, so I guess it went for 525 years with nobody knowing about it. Well, it wasn't invented yet, so how could anyone know.
Just a bunch of religious kooks making sh_t up.
Jesus was apparently born in year 1, not year 0, so it would seem we are out a year. Hmm. or did he die then? I can't keep the birth/death thing straight in my head, especially with Easter when he apparently gets up and walks around again, but nobody seems to record him dying again after <shrug>.
In the old Holocene calendar, it would be 12022 HE, which seems more in line with Earth and not based on some religious silliness.
Oh well, we have a date to base things off of.. kind of... if you believe in all that.
The Chinese have a lunisolar calendar that is based on... well read this

The Chinese calendar (華夏曆法) or Chinese lunisolar calendar is also called Agricultural Calendar [農曆; 农历; Nónglì; 'farming calendar'], or Yin Calendar [陰曆; 阴历; Yīnlì; 'yin calendar']), as movements of the sun (representing Yang) and moon (representing Yin) are the references for the Chinese lunisolar calendar calculations.[citation needed] The Chinese lunisolar calendar is the origin of some variant calendars adopted by other neighboring countries, such as Vietnam and Korea.

I like the idea of things being based on reality, so Sun and Moon get my vote as a good base, but then when would the calendar begin? Humans have been around a lot longer than 2026 years <laugh>, so maybe the calendar should start back when the first human remains were found, which I think is currently around 18,000 years ago, so maybe this year should be 18001 not 2026.

If some space alien arrived they would have a good hearty laugh at all of this.

Of course he was born in year one. You don't say that a child under a year old is in their zeroth year do you.
@ninalanyon Actually you do because they have a birth date. You aren't born one year old. You can be a month old.

@JamesBugman At one month old you are in your first year. Your first birthday celebrates the completion of your first year.
@ninalanyon Yes exactly, but your birthday is on year zero.
