My late ex fiancee did the pork and sauerkraut thing at christmas and easter. When I got together with her I changed it up a bit, I slowly cooked them in a crockpot, a half cup each of grape and apple juices as braising liquids, added sliced onions to the thoroughly rinsed sauerkraut, browned the bone in pork shoulder roast, three hours on high, five hours on low, put the roast under tin foil in a ceramic bowl to retain heat, it would fall apart tender on its own, while the pork was resting, I would drain and reduce the liquid in the sauerkraut and onions, then caramelize it with butter, and serve it all with from scratch garlic parsley mashed potatoes.

I don’t eat pork, but I’ve got to say it sounds like a great meal!

We will be having the same tomorrow. Sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and pork all on the fork! Best taste ever!
Happy New Year!

@FlowersInHerHair Happy New Year to you, too!

I've been wondering just what/how to eat sauerkraut other than on a hot dog. Not something I ever had growing up.
Poppies · 61-69, F
@ChipmunkErnie In Maryland some people eat it as a Thanksgiving side dish, which seems bizarre to me. Where I grew up we did not eat it at Thanksgiving, only at New Year's. I think most people serve it beside potatoes, but I don't feel like I need potatoes.
