The year is almost up! Which memory stands out the most for you? [I Wish Everyone a Happy New Year]

For me it was the first days of lockdown, seeing the empty streets around here, looking through the window and seeing a ghost city. Pretty shocking!

Seeing the grocery store shelves empty. I have never seen that before and I over heard an elderly lady telling her daughter that the las time she saw this was as a child during WWII.

@TexChik it happens once a year or every other year down here during hurricane season. People don’t prepare before the season starts and go into full blown panic mode when a storm takes aim at the SE Texas coast.

@JesseInTX I could see that. But completely bare empty? It was crazy. They were hiring people off the street to help stock the shelves. I saw a woman buy all the tylenol and advil on the shelves. A cart full, for $1500 . Crazy

@TexChik @JesseInTX we get that here when they call for a snowstorm. usually the stores recover within a few days. now you see bare shelves that aren't being restocked for a long time.

@TexChik completely. Paper towels, toilet paper, water, non perishable food. Lines extending outside the store, a normal 15-20 minute grocery store trip becomes 2-2 1/2 hours. I always start stocking up in March. Just buy 1-2 extra rolls of paper towels, next trip an extra pack of toilet paper, next trip an extra case of water. That way when the freak out happens I’m already prepared.

@TexChik I did during Ike because we were taking a direct hit. I didn’t during Harvey because it made landfall a couple hours south. Harvey was just a damn rain maker that caused all the flooding.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@Stereoguy exactly. Need at least a weeks worth of supplies if not more. Depending on how fast the storm moves through.
TexChik · F
@Stereoguy Here at the farm , after a big storm, we have to check and see if the store is still there.

@TexChik @Stereoguy
Fill up all vehicles is a must. And don’t forget a run to the liquor store either.

@Stereoguy liquor stores here were designed as essential businesses during the lockdown. Thank goodness.

@JesseInTX the governor here closed liquor stores when covid first broke out. fortunately some supermarkets sell wine and beer. thankfully they're back open
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@saragoodtimes grocery stores here sell beer and wine but not liquor. Also when restaurants were limited to take out only the Governor made an executive order to allow for take out beer/wine/mixed drinks with a purchase of food.

@Stereoguy same. All I had to do was buy an order of chips and salsa and I could buy all the alcohol I wanted. He’s in the process of making it permanent since it was so well received.
