Lights at Christmas time

When it gets to be early December, I always notice every house has it's porch light or flood lights on. When it's January, all those lights are suddenly dark again.

Is this people just not putting up Christmas lights and using their porch and flood lights as Christmas lights? I don't get it but I see it every year.
