I have a very strange Christmas tale
My darling and I are separated by a lot of miles right now because she's in Japan taking care of her elderly mother and I'm in America being main caretaker to my own mother, who has dementia.
On Christmas morning around 3 AM I hear my phone ringing. I jump out of bed and look and it's my darling's number. But she almost always calls me through Skype, this time she was calling direct, which is more expensive.
I pick up and I hear her talking to a an aquaintance while waiting for a bus- she accidently hit my number. So I'm yelling into the phone trying to get her attention. But even though I hear her perfectly she's not hearing me.
After a minute of yelling I stopped and just listened. This is a side of her I don't see enough of. Just being herself. Because when we speak Japanese together she's careful to stay away from slang and colloquialisms that I won't understand. This was her just hanging out and laughing in a way that's a little different than I get to see.
I could have listened with the phone open for hours, but after 5 minutes I hung up because I was worried what it was costing her.
I went back to sleep, but I was smiling thinking in a way it's the best Christmas present I could ask for.
In the morning I go into the kitchen and find theres a plate in the sink covered in cookie crumbs and a mostly drunk glass of milk. My mother must have woke up while I was asleep and made a snack. Which is strange
A. Because she doesn't do that
And
B. I never heard her, and I sleep with my door open so I can hear her if there's a problem.
But I shrugged it off and laughed because it looked like Santa had been here.
Later on Christmas I call my darling and tell her about the phone. She's telling me "No way, you dreamed it because my phone isn't showing any calls to you!"
I'm telling her she called and recanting the conversation I heard, what I could understand of it. And she concedes she did have this conversation.
She's telling me it's impossible because not only does the phone show no outgoing call but it would have been impossible for her to call direct because the calling card she uses for that has been empty for a while. She hasn't refilled it because she's been using Skype
So she says to me "If I accidently called you last night who paid for it?!"
Now I'm thinking about the plate of cookie crumbs and half drunk glass of milk
