Labor Day originated in the late 19th century as American labor unions pushed for a holiday recognizing workers’ contributions, with the first celebration held on September 5, 1882, in New York City and the federal holiday established in 1894.
Labor Day’s roots lie in the harsh working conditions of the Industrial Revolution, when many Americans worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, often in unsafe environments. These conditions spurred labor movements to demand better hours, pay, and safety.
The first Labor Day parade took place on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union in New York City. The idea spread quickly, and by 1887 several states—including Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York—had passed laws recognizing the holiday.
By 1894, 23 states had adopted Labor Day. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday in September a national holiday honoring American workers.
