It's not a matter of Christmas being just for Christians, it's more a matter of Christmas being a Christian celebration of light. This celebration of light became a Christian tradition that was introduced by Constantine the Great who ruled the Roman Empire from about the year 375AD for the next 31 years.
It was Constantine who first introduced Christianity to his empire as being the 'standard' that everyone could adopt and worship openly, thereby banning paganism from their culture.
This celebration of light then became known as Christmas and it was only the Christians of the world since then who could relate to the meaning of this celebration of light and its relationship to Christmas.
That is why our Christmas trees are decorated with colored lights and our houses are adorned with colored lights as well, though the original intent was to use pure white light, not colored light in the celebration of light. Placing lights on a house or a tree is therefore a Christian tradition.
