Santa Muerte: The Folk Saint of Death
Interesting. Contrary to popular belief Santa Muerte started with colonialism when the Spanish introduced Catholicism by indigenous people combining death deities with the grim reaper. If you really think about this, it cuts pretty deep because Santa Muerte though popularized through drug cartels recently, also related to marginalized people. Followers not only include drug cartels but indigenous people, sex workers, police, lawyers, taxi drivers, rich people but also farmers so there's obviously an interesting history there.
She eventually became a saint who was worshipped secretly in years because the Spanish sentenced people to death for worshipping her so for a long time she was worshipped only in closets.
I am just checking this out because one time at a boxing club there was a preacher who saw my tattoo because I have a very identifying tattoo and he told me all about how I was in a cult and decided to invite me to his church for an exorcism (literally he said something like that.)
