Do people buy amateur art?

I'm thinking of trying out abstract art to sell, and experiment with textures and techniques from youtube. But do people look for credentials of an artist before buying? Is it a thing?

I think it can range quite a lot. most of the stuff I made, I couldn't give away. but I think you'd find the secret sauce as it were - if you make it because you want to do it as a job, I suspect you'd find you'll never make anything too terribly noteworthy. if you make it because you want/need to/have something to say/do it because it's part of you, you'll end up with some great stuff. perhaps something that only you ever appreciate within your lifetime, but still great stuff.

so the tl;dr answer is yes, it's feasible. but I think you'd make better stuff, possibly more, by making it for yourself than you would making stuff specifically to sell.
