Why do humans crave drugs?

It seems that people are hardwired to enjoy all sorts of drugs (alcohol, weed, video games, ...). I find that interesting since it looks like a flaw in our brain that we are trying to fix by escaping our thought, or our true personality. What do you think is the main reason we escape into the arms of brain altering mechanisms.

I've never done recreational drugs, including weed. I have this strange quirk in my personality even from childhood that unless I have a good reason to do something I don't, so I never found a reason to do drugs. I did drink to excess in my younger years until I got hold of that. Now I rarely drink.
I think genetics and influence play a role, and some have thrill seeking personalities. I believe there is a variety of factors.

@ravenwind43 That is an important point when you mentioned different personalities. Some people are really more inclined to this. I tried quite a few drugs, but they do not have a big impact on me, more like meh, so I took them rarely. Especially weed has no impact, I smoked with some folks and they were all stoned, and it did almost nothing for me, i was very dissapointed :)

@sumojumo I think so. I used to hang around people that were smoking pot (as a teen) and they always found it fascinating that I didn't. Lots of stoned conversations lol.

@sumojumo Makes sense at 17..at 47 you might want to ask yourself when the party ends. lol
I realize medicinal pot is different. :)
