Why do humans crave drugs?

It seems that people are hardwired to enjoy all sorts of drugs (alcohol, weed, video games, ...). I find that interesting since it looks like a flaw in our brain that we are trying to fix by escaping our thought, or our true personality. What do you think is the main reason we escape into the arms of brain altering mechanisms.

We are addicted to escaping. Human beings can be incredibly competitive and egotistical.
The use of these things are used as a way to manage the struggles in life but also as a way to challenge the ego... "its not gonna happen to us" we always think we're not going to succumb to the addiction.
