This might be a really stupid question, but maybe someone knows the answer...

I was watching this adventure show on TV today, and they were looking for gold. They were breaking open quartz stones, and checking if there were any gold veins in it.
I don't really know how geology works. Could I just walk around the forest, search for quartz, break one open, and find gold?

No biggie... Gold is find naturally in Quartz deposits... Something to do with the origin of the quartz is common to gold also ... Alluvial gold had been separated out from the quartz and washed down stream

They are often found in the same places but both are distinctly different

Found a chunk of quartz with a vein of silver in the creek after a flood one time.

Possibly but it would take a lot of random pieces of quartz to make it worth your while except, just maybe, you could find a piece with a couple of grams of gold in it. Right now 24k gold is going for about $40/gm and a lot of gold veins are about 21K gold so that could be about $36/gm
