I personally don't liked a slug in a shot gun ,00 buck my limit
I need more knock down power I use a rifle .30-06 ,11/111
Dad always told me "Pick the right tool for the job "
Never found a slug and a shotgun to be that tool
but to each his own I guess

@rckt148 depends on your needs. The state of Illinois doesn't have a rifle season so a shotgun is the only appropriate tool

@Powderflask I see ,how about a bow ?
as you can see ,(maybe you can't) I am not a fan of slugs in a shot gun ,but I know some very good hunters who are
We use rifles in my state and shot guns
But I see your situation though ,,sorry for my 2 cents
I was taught the wrong barrel with the wrong slug damaged the barrel ,and everything I have read supports that
guess that why Dad always stressed over 006 chose a different gun

@rckt148 that's fine I asked for input. But I disagree it shouldn't damage a barrel whatsoever.

@Powderflask well do the research and on that one
All the manufactures agree ,,certain slugs only to be used for certain barrels ,,my Dad had a reason for everything
But being a know it all kid ,,I liked to prove him wrong
On this one as most things he told my know it all ass
He was right ,,and there are actual statistics now that support what he said ,,
He was a wise man ,,and a great hunter

@Powderflask * note * slugs in a shotgun are fine if in a slug barrel so you dont mess with the choke

@rckt148 I'm not disagreeing that there are different slugs and different barrels I'm saying it shouldn't damage a barrel at all in modern steel guns. Lead will crush and elongate over pressure long before steel will. Now if your talking about antiques that's different.

@1GHOST yea as I just commented back to him there was a reason I was told not to use them in guns I got from my Dad
I just looked it up so I was not just talking out my butt and he was right ,,
certain barrels for certain slugs its fine
but wrong slug ,wrong barrel it can do damage
and I did neglect to ask about the laws of his state
Here we can use rifles ,was not thinking other states different law
Like some states you can only hunt gator in the day
some you can only hunt at night with a treble hook
I get ,different states different laws
I was ignorant to the laws of his state ,,but in mine
I use a better gun for the job ..I am afforded the luxury of the choice ,,sorry he is not
I hope I was not sounding disrespectful ,I guess I assumed to much and stated my preference ,,sorry

@1GHOST I do understand ,I have been hunting over 40 yrs myself .and We do have different barrels for 1 gun
I go by the way I was taught since Dad was wise and I learned to respect he did not just say things for no reason ,
but did not mean to cause an argument ,,but I should have know better ,
I am also a vet qualified on various weapons ,so I do understand just a barrel change is all that is needed ,
But he does keep saying modern weapons it does not matter
so all I can say reloads ? ,right barrel or not ,its his gun
I plan to keep Dads guns how he gave them to me and use a rifle when more knock down power is required
as I said before
I should have asked what state he was in and the laws of the state and if he could use a rifle and then shut up
he cant use a rifle ,,which would be my preference over a slug

@rckt148 Well the 2 things that matter as far as modern guns and reloading are ;
not to over charge the powder
And making sure the round and barrel will work together / again more of a choke issue .
Both items can be answered by the gun manufacturer or after market barrel maker / stick with a brand name !
