Did you reconsider buying kids in your family an iPad after learning Steve Jobs forbade his kids from using them?

I wouldn't buy my kids tablets or phones before 16
I think this is a good age too, but in some schools they've implemented this in the curriculum as early as 8 years of age and require them to complete schoolwork.@MethDozer

@AnonymouslyYours And that is bullshit on several levels. Not only does it remove the right of the family to have a say in their children's raising and exposure. It encourages dangerous behaviour for children. They really shouldn't be encouraged to be online. Then the issue that it forces and unnecessary and frivolous expense on families to buy their children techno toys and have internet. Two luxuries that should be on.par with the cable bill.

It's lazy schooling

@AnonymouslyYours Teaching kids basic computer functions, coding, and how they operate should be what is focused on. All that is needed is a computer lab at school. Teaching them how to use the web and shut like that is unnecessary. The internet is unnecessary at their level.

@MethDozer They started teaching my son coding in the 3rd grade ,,I seen where they want more women into the field so they have incentives to get them interested
My son hacks his games ,,gives himself unlimited cash
then he can buy and mod all the best cars and weapons
He leads missions that sounds like adults playing with him and I have to go see who he is playing with ,tell them to watch their language ,,,bust him that he is only 11
I hear older kids say "You mean I have been taking orders from a little kid " and the other team mates tell him to shut up "You ran missions ,,you can't do half the crap this kid can do ,,
That is the only reason I let him play
As far as strategy ,, he is 10 moves ahead of all those kids
I am anxious to see what he does with it in real life
I don't really want him in the military
But I bet you if he is ,,he will be flying drones or planning assaults ,not on the line taking fire
,,He blows me away all he can do at 11
I am an old hacker ,cracking programs
He can do things I know nothing about
I have control over his phone ,his Play station ,I see what he does ,who he is playing with ,,and I hear him ,,his console is less then 15 feet from me
He has never done anything to make me distrust him ,,,
His friends have to tell him what the missions are
If I hear any profanity he knows he looses his privileges
I don't agree with little kids on cell phones and on social media either ,,but now all their testing is on line
He has activities he does at home that raises his grades
and I can see daily how he is doing at school
It is a digital age ,,like it or not
I am glad my son is at least gaining skills from it
Battle ships now are controlled with a joy stick ,the days of standing at the helm are over ,,,computers and joy sticks

@rckt148 That's great and all. However requiring kids to be online to do their schoolwork or encouraging them to be online is a bad idea and BS.

Honestly I don't care about your son's video game habits. Nor impressed by them

@MethDozer you did not have to be an ass
I was just saying ..we laugh at kids bragging about their kills in call of duty ,,but now days missions are flown from Nebraska ,,not in Afghanistan
My girls had to earn phone privileges ,only allowed on a PC to do spread sheets and put water mark backgrounds in a book report
But when all testing is on line ,,how do you suggest we change that ? home school ?
Thats on line too now
If the planning and strategy gives him an edge in a changing world ,,,
His only alternative will be to become Amish
Robots are taking their jobs ,,if he is not ready ,,how will I be able to help him
I am hands on ,,worked on machines and built homes
but a damn computer cuts out materials ,,runs a lathe better then I can ,,,CIC and CNC is taking over everything
MethDozer · M
@rckt148 There is no reason to force online homework or test online.. The interventions not needed for either.
Sorry bud, but you are too convoluted and all over left field to to with.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@MethDozer they are only tested on line now
they take very few tests on paper and he is only in the 5th grade ,,
but my grandkids in high school its the same way
thats just how its done now ,,,
what would you suggest ?
all the kids in the whole school are tested this way
I tell them I won't allow my son to test that way ,I feel he is to young to be on a secure server ,using a computer ?
I am asking you ,,,how would you handle it ?
MethDozer · M
@rckt148 That's absurd. 5th grade. Besides testing in a computer lab at school is way different forcing a family to buy gadgets so they can do internet homework. Apples and oranges

@MethDozer My nieces and nephews go to schools that are technologies based schooling. They don't have snow days anymore either. They have virtual days and they have 10 school days once they return to school to complete the assignments the teachers load on their laptops.
MethDozer · M
@Fungirlmmm Poor kids. My nephew has to go for 9.5 hours. No wonder kids are so depressed these days.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@MethDozer They go from 745 am to 245 pm. Used to be if they missed snow days they went on Saturday and Sunday. They teach them coding and other things as well beginning in 3rd grade so of course they are all into that. I keep wondering if they will eventually make those jobs obsolete because the industry will be saturated. We may have gone to college but they are learning the same things in high school
MethDozer · M
@Fungirlmmm Probably. I also wonder how these kids will fare not having basic skills as adults or experience on the physical world. I'd hate to see our youth turn out like China's.
