What's your opinion on a deus ex machina?

Lazy writing? Or, okay when done right?

I'm writing a story, and as a joke, I wrote in that one of my characters has a seemingly magical ability to appear out of nowhere. I'm a little divided on whether or not to write her in saving the day. A little too obvious? Or maybe she attempts to save the day, and has no real impact. Idk!

That last idea sounds good. A magical ability that has absolutely no impact on the outcome of events, sort of a useless heroine. As you can probably guess, I'm not a big fan of [i]deus ex machina[/i], but do think that it has potential as a comedic device.

@Bushranger I think you're right about the comedic aspect. I can see it in my head. The protagonist is going to talk her up as an unstoppable force, only for her to show up and fail.
