PLAGIARISM

I have a question regarding plagiarism. I'm about to join an art contest themed "perspective" and I had these idea of a painting but i just can't seem to find the right reference for a posing that ineeded so I browse through pinterest and found a posing anatomy sketch by robert liberace that fits perfectly to may concept idea. I'm not just going to copy the sketch itself and paint it I'm just going to make the sketch as a reference for the posing that I needed. Will it be considered as plagiarism?

It depends on how similar your final piece is to the original sketch. Also, and I may have misunderstood you on this, you imply that you are going to incorporate the original sketch into your piece. While that may not be considered as plagiarism necessarily, it may be deemed as lacking in originality, if the original sketch has more proportional emphasis than your own work.

@room101 I'm going to se the sketch yes. But I would only be using the posing. I may alter the rendering or the lighting but I worried that someone would notice it was from robert liberace and acuse me of plagiarism. I'm going to incorporate some elements and alter the piece. But the anatomy would be the center of the piece. Do you think it would degrade the artistic value of the piece and come off as lacking creativity? I just really want the pose and I just can't create my own reference since it was a nude. Thank you ao much for your response.

@ajlopez I don't if this is going to help.

When I was doing my photography degree (a long time ago lol), we were given the task of producing a small portfolio of images which were influenced by famous art works. The reaction I got from two of my five images was very different and may illustrate the conundrum that you are facing.

In one of them, I got a friend of mine to pose outdoors on a curving road. It was late in the evening and I accentuated the perspective distortions one gets by using a wide angle lens. The image was a direct reference to The Scream by Edvard Munch.

The second image I used was a shot of a flamenco guitarist that I took at a live gig in a local bar. It was a once in a life time shot because the guitarist took up a pose (for literally a few seconds) that was very reminiscent of The Old Guitarist by Picasso.

The fist shot was deemed to be too much of a copy and unoriginal. The second was praised as a great example of seeing, recognising and allowing oneself to be influenced by great art.

I have to say that I didn't agree with the comments that I got from my lecturer. Sure, my friend had her hands to her face and was screaming. But, in my image, she was to the left of the frame and not to the right and she was on a road not on a bridge with a body of water behind her. But it was similar enough for the lecturer to say that I'd simply copied the painting. Of course, I had.

@ajlopez No problem at all. Use the pose.......but try to give it some of your own originality.

Best of luck.
