If I'm doing something active and get thirsty, would drinking soda or an energy drink be better than drinking nothing in terms of hydration?

And by something active I mean like playing a sport, jogging, or working out

Probably should stick with water!

Water and lots of it. Maybe Gatorade

Yesterday it 97 degrees out and I found drinking a a gallon of water and liter of grape Gatorade kept me hydrated for long enough to the end of my work. A 4 hour work period

That was during the work period and I'd been outside before that working morning too. I just drink as many cups of ice water as I can at home. I think that's why it worked.

Well yes at the moment but you'll burn out super quick and need to pee which means you'll lose more liquids

By the time u'r thirsty, u're already dehydrated...before and after a workout, best hydration is plain old H2O.

Something better than nothing.

Something with electrolytes even better.
