The saddest problem I see is self mutalization

In E.A. I was always reading about others who seems to take pride in 'cutting' I never read of this problem in here.
Can anyone in here explain to me the WHY? It is dangerous, but they don't care! I just want to know why and how self mutilizing your body can make you FEEL better.
